Brigitte won an Academy Award for Baz Luhrman’s MOULIN ROUGE, and also received an Academy Award nomination for ROMEO + JULIET. She has collaborated as Production Designer on all of Director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's films; AMORES PERROS, 21 GRAMS, BABEL and BIUTIFUL. Some of her other work as Production Designer includes, the not yet released film, SAFE HOUSE as well as, THE READER, VANTAGE POINT, SHE HATE ME, REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, ABEL, FIDEL, ENTRE VILLA Y UNA MUJER DESNUDA and Alfonso Cuaron's SOLO CON TU PAREJA.

Mann Stearns Distinguished Faculty Award

Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, assistant professor of Performing Arts (right), has been chosen to receive the 2008-2009 Mann Stearns Distinguished Faculty Award at Emerson College. The award was created in 1993 by Irma Mann Stearns '67, a former Emerson Trustee and Board of Trustees chair, and her husband, Norman Stearns.

Schroeder-Arce, who joined the Emerson faculty in 2006, plans to use her award to support the development of a play entitled Shadow Dreams, which will examine the plight of an aboriginal boy "who dreams of how his life would be changed if he were of a different race and culture." The play, which will be written in collaboration with playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, will ask questions related to identity, cultural exploration and understanding.

Last year's Mann Stearns winner, Cristina Kotz Cornejo, associate professor of Visual and Media Arts, delivered a talk on her work as an independent filmmaker and showed clips from a film she created that she was able to promote with support from her Mann Stearns award. Titled 3 AMÉRICAS, the critically acclaimed film has been shown at film festivals, conferences, museums and schools. Shot in Boston and Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a crew that included nine Emerson students and alumni, the film explores "domestic violence, family secrets and cultural identity through the eyes of a teenager," according to Kotz Cornejo. In the last year, she has shown the film at 13 venues nationally and internationally, ranging from Montevideo, Uruguay to San Francisco to Austin, Tx. Kotz Cornejo said, "The Mann Stearns award supported this important phase of the filmmaking process, and for that I am very grateful."

"América Campo, the 16-year-old heroine of Cristina Kotz Cornejo's astonishing 3 Américas, would love to live in the Austin suburbs – or anywhere far away from her hot-headed, controlling uncle in Boston. A troubled teen (she's lost both parents) América is also a pain in the ass: she scowls, lies and shoplifts compulsively. When a domestic dispute results in a tragedy, América is sent to live with her grandmother Lucia in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires. Here, the gloomy teen has to cope with deprivations that go way beyond her grandmother's frostiness: there's no indoor toilet, the refrigerator constantly breaks, and her peers, forced out of high school by poverty, scavenge the streets for plastic bottles to recycle.

The film is beautifully shot, and the screenplay is a marvel of minimalism in which every word matters. As América, newcomer Kristen Gonzalez gives an utterly compelling performance, her smoldering temper perfectly offset by the bone-weariness portrayed by veteran Argentinian actress Ana Maria Colombo. If the story has a somewhat predictable arc – two prickly, difficult women gradually come to care for each other – it's handled gracefully and with infinite subtlety. Kotz Cornejo based some of the narrative on her own experiences as a teen, and in the post-screening Q&A she described how she had to resist a producer who "wanted me to change the script to include tango, because I didn't want to be that clichéd." Luckily, she succeeded: the film is a cliché-free zone, and a richly nuanced character study."

I'm in LA, for the last few days I've been working on getting the score recorded with my composer Germaine Franco. It's been a great working relationship and the music is so beautiful!! I've been in heaven and had to pinch myself over how blessed I am to work with such talented and creative people.

We recorded at Knobworld Studios (www.knobworld.com) in Echo Park with recording engineer (and composer in his own right), Jim Lang. He has a great studio and wonderful vibe. The musicians have been awesome (and that's an understatement), Federico Ramos on guitar (www.federicoramos.com), Eliseo Borrero on bass and "Papa Ginou" on flute (www.pedroflute.com).

We are finished with the mix and just need to finish up the final files for the sound mix in Boston.

Also met with George Johnson, a talented singer/songwriter who is contributing his talents for the tracks my brother is producing. What a wonderful guy, I am sure glad I met him. Again, I am so lucky!

I spent the entire weekend fine cutting the picture. I received great notes from some trusted sources and after being away from cutting for awhile I was able to see the film all over again and saw where I needed to make changes. I am very happy with the new cut! It's tighter and the story is flowing.

Now I need to get the picture and audio files to my composer. I am looking forward to working on the music and sound design.

Jewel and The Catch Screens in Hollywood

My very first film, the documentary Jewel and The Catch (1993) screened on December 3rd at the Spielberg Theatre at The Egyptian in Hollywood as part of a Special screening from the Outfest Legacy Project Collection.

I made the film because I felt Jewel Thais-Williams' (see pic) story needed to be told and though I had no film training at the time nor any money or equipment, I decided to buy a Beaulieau Super 8 camera from Super8Sound in Burbank and with that camera I set out to make my movie.

It's 48 minutes long and hasn't seen an audience in over 10 years! Now it's part of the UCLA Film and Television Archives under the Outfest Legacy Project Collection.

The screening at the LA Latino International Film Festival last Sunday went really well. It was a packed house and all the films were well done and fit together in a nice program. Very positive response from the audience. Lots of laughter. Can't ask for anything else when you screen a comedy. Here I am after the screening.

Hurricane Katrina Debacle

I couldn't stand doing nothing so I wrote all my representatives, here's one of my letters.

Dear Senator Kennedy:
The Hurricane Katrina tragedy is a horrific natural disaster many people hoped would never happen but the authorities in charge were warned and new that this very tragedy was a distinct possibility. Unlike the tsunami in Asia, where people were not forewarned, here in the US the public was warned and though many people heeded the warning others who were incapable of leaving due to lack of resources or physical disabilities stayed behind. Are these people not American citizens? I was horrified the days following the Hurricane to watch my fellow citizens left to their own devices after having experienced a horrific traumatic event. To allow people (young, old and poor) to die from dehydration and heat exhaustion is inexcusable and criminal. I saw on television as news crews and others entered the New Orleans area with no problem yet our own military and government authorities were apparently unable to access the area. I don't understand. This is outrageous. President Bush said that this "response is unacceptable." What I say is his leadership is unacceptable. FEMA director Mike Brown's leadership is unacceptable and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff's leadership is unacceptable. Gov. Kathleen Blanco's leadership was unacceptable and Mayor Ray Nagin's leadership was unacceptable. Their lack of pre-planning and anticipation of evacuation of the least capable and the most needy is criminally negligent. Their clear lack of response afterward and prior to leads one to wonder if race or class or both had anything to do with this. The people with means left but if they hadn't and these people had been white I venture to say that a quicker response would have happened. I have no doubt about it. As an American citizen I want answers and accountability. I am truly embarrassed at my country's leaders who were all vacationing (Bush in TX, Rove in ME, Cheney in WY) or shopping (C. Rice at Ferragamo's in NYC) while an unprecedented category 5 (then 4) hurricane was headed to a major American city.

Screenings at the New York Latino International Film Festival and the University Film and Video Association in Chicago went really well. My short, La Guerra Que No Fue, received finalist status in the Juried Screening competition at the UFVA.

Wednesday was the formal end to the IFP Director's Lab. It was a very useful 4 weeks. We ended the final two classes with Eric Eason (director of "Manito") and Kerry Barden, casting director of many, many films. You should look up his imdb credits to learn more about his work.

I've been attending a lab in New York through the Independent Feature Project for first time feature filmmakers. The seminar is led by Scott Macaulay, of Forensic Films and producer of Saving Face, Raising Victor Vargas, Gummo, Julien-Donkey Boy, What Happened Was... among others. So far it's been a great experience and I look forward to my daily treks to the city, my old stomping ground.
